We are currently looking for a Mortgage Loan Underwriter I. This position will be located at 2605 Washington Blvd, Ogden, UT. This position analyzes, reviews, and makes the credit decision (approve, deny, or suspend) on mortgage loan application files consistent with the guideline requirements of secondary market investors, housing agencies, and Bank of Utah; and in compliance with government regulations. Types of products include but are not limited to; Conventional, FHA, VA, and USDA.

To qualify for this Mortgage Loan Underwriter I position you must have: 

  • Minimum of 1-3 years underwriting experience.
  • 5 years Mortgage Loan Experience (i.e, processor or loan officer).
  • Good analytical and organizational skills.
  • Proficiency with computer systems including Microsoft Office.
  • Familiar with the analysis of the self-employed borrower and able to calculate income with minimal help for all business entities partnership, corporation, LLC, sole proprietor.
  • Great communication skills.
  • Genuine commitment to customer service.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment.

This Mortgage Loan Underwriter I position requires you to:

  • Reviews in detail, (underwrites) conventional (FHLMC/FNMA), FHA, and VA loan files submitted for approval, and makes credit decision.
  • Can defend underwriting decision if challenged by investor.
  • Analyzes submitted documents in detail for compliance with particular loan type, parameters and guidelines.
  • Makes sure loan file meets requirements for investment quality; i.e., credit, collateral and capacity.
  • Ensures eligibility per loan program of all facets of loan; i.e., LTV, property type, borrower type, mortgage insurance, reserves, occupancy, loan type, etc.
  • Reviews automated feedback, if applicable, for eligibility, accuracy, and conformance with other submitted loan documents.
  • Analyzes appraisal report to determine if property meets investor guidelines and is an acceptable risk.
  • Reviews preliminary title report for completeness, accuracy and compliance with other submitted exhibits and loan program requirements.
  • Utilizes Allregs manuals for Agency and Investor guidelines when underwriting the file and to find answers to questions from mortgage personnel.
  • As part of underwriting process, reviews loan for regulatory compliance, including Qualified Mortgage guidelines, based on internal compliance checklist.
  • Issues clear, specific conditions as needed at approval; makes them understandable and meaningful.
  • Has good communication skills, looks for ways to approve loans and works with other employees in a positive an timely manner.
  • Is able to underwrite 25-45 loans per month.
  • Meets current Bank of Utah Minimum Underwriting Standards (Points).
